FG Targets Wheat Growth with Subsidy Scheme for Farmers

The Federal Government of Nigeria has launched an ambitious initiative aimed at boosting wheat production across the country through the National Agricultural Growth Scheme and Agro Pocket (NAGS-AP).
Speaking during a briefing at the Federal Ministry of Finance headquarters, Honourable Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, highlighted the government’s commitment to enhancing wheat production. The initiative spans 16 wheat-producing states and seeks to improve agricultural productivity, thereby boosting economic growth.
Key Features of the Scheme
Ishaku Buba, National Project Coordinator, revealed that the program targets 280,000 smallholder farmers and selected medium-scale farmers across specific agricultural clusters. To participate, farmers are required to contribute resources for one hectare of irrigated land.
The government is providing substantial subsidies to participants, including 25% off certified wheat seeds and 50% off fertilizers, significantly lowering input costs. Fertilizer packages are tailored by region, with farmers in most states receiving 50kg of urea and 100kg of NPK fertilizer. In Jigawa State, however, increased fertilizer quantities are provided due to soil nutrient needs and local government commitments to wheat production.
Expanding Reach and Ensuring Security
To facilitate the distribution of these essential inputs, 409 redemption centres have been set up, with 281 already operational, reaching 68,389 farmers—about 24.42% of the targeted number. The scheme is set to conclude the distribution phase later this month, in time for the wheat planting season.
Enhanced security measures have been implemented at the redemption centres, with personnel from the Police, DSS, and NSCDC ensuring the smooth flow of operations.
Promoting Food Security
Minister Edun commended the efforts of the project team, emphasizing the significance of the scheme in strengthening Nigeria’s food security, supporting rural economies, and reducing the country’s reliance on imported wheat.
