Police Service Commission Dismisses 18 Senior Officers, Demotes 19

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has announced the dismissal of 18 senior police officers and the demotion of 19 others following its plenary session held in Abuja. These decisions were part of the Commission’s review of 110 pending disciplinary matters, 23 appeals and petitions, and 13 court judgments.

The officers dismissed include ten Assistant Superintendents, four Deputy Superintendents, two Chief Superintendents, and one Superintendent. The demoted officers comprise one Assistant Commissioner of Police, one Chief Superintendent, two Superintendents, two Deputy Superintendents, and thirteen Assistant Superintendents.

In addition, two Assistant Inspectors General of Police received disciplinary actions: one was reprimanded for failing to execute lawful instructions, while the other received a warning letter for negligence.

Several other officers found culpable were subjected to penalties ranging from severe reprimands and regular reprimands to warning letters. Most of those dismissed will also face prosecution by the Legal Unit of the Nigeria Police Force.

Three disciplinary cases were deferred for additional information from the Inspector General of Police.

The Chairman of the PSC, retired DIG Hashimu Argungu, emphasized the Commission’s commitment to expediting disciplinary reviews to ensure officers not found culpable can progress in their careers while those guilty face appropriate consequences.

“The Commission will not spare police officers involved in civil disputes such as land, marital, or rent-related issues. These matters are for the courts, while the police should focus on criminal cases and threats to life,” Argungu stated.

The plenary session was chaired by DIG Argungu and attended by key members, including retired DIG Taiwo Lakanu and Secretary of the Commission, Chief Onyemuche Nnamani.

This decisive action underscores the PSC’s stance on upholding discipline and professionalism within the Nigeria Police Force. Cybercrime and Misinformation: A Call for Action
