Obasanjo Slams Death Rumours, Vows Tragedy for Perpetrators
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has categorically denied the social media rumours surrounding his death, stating that he is very much alive. The rumours, which circulated widely, claimed that the revered statesman had passed away. Obasanjo expressed his shock and disappointment over the misinformation while addressing a gathering in Osogbo, Osun State, at the commissioning of the Old-Garage-Oke-Fia-Lameco road.
Accompanied by Governor Ademola Adeleke, Obasanjo told the crowd, “I heard the rumour that I was dead. I saw it on social media. I quickly told my children and my relations that it was not true and that I was alive. Those who want me dead, that is their wish, but God still keeps me alive.”
In his address, Obasanjo condemned the spread of such malicious rumours and questioned the motives behind them. He expressed his disbelief over the source of the false claims, adding, “Why would anyone wish me dead? Those who harbour such thoughts will not escape tragedy themselves.”
The former president further criticized the irresponsible use of technology to spread damaging misinformation. “This kind of rumour is not only disturbing but shows the extent to which some people misuse technology. It is unacceptable,” he said.
Obasanjo also took the opportunity to commend the efforts of Governor Adeleke, praising his leadership and managerial skills. The road project, which aims to ease transportation within the state, was a key initiative of the Adeleke-led administration. Obasanjo prayed for the safety of all who would use the newly commissioned road, invoking blessings against calamities and misfortune for those who would travel on it.
