Fagbemi Calls for Comprehensive Review of Nigeria’s Laws
Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), has called for a comprehensive overhaul of Nigeria’s outdated laws to address emerging issues and align with modern socio-economic realities.
Fagbemi made the statement in Ikogosi-Ekiti during the opening of a four-day retreat for members of the Committee for the Review of Outdated Nigerian Laws, organised by the Federal Ministry of Justice.
He lamented that the last review of the country’s laws in 2004 failed to keep pace with current realities, leaving several gaps that hinder implementation and development.
“The issue of implementation arises because outdated laws become ineffective,” Fagbemi explained. “Updating the laws allows us to address the lapses in the previous statutes, ensuring they comply with international best practices and reflect the spirit of the legislation.”
He further stressed that modernised laws would not only promote socio-economic development but also attract foreign investments by meeting global legal standards.
“To attract foreign investment, we must update our laws to align with international norms,” he added.
The Minister expressed confidence that the review would address these issues and position the country’s legal framework for growth and stability.
Olawale Fapohunda, SAN, Chairman of the Nigerian Laws Review Committee, highlighted the retreat’s importance in refining strategies to meet the review mandate within the set timeline.
“The laws of the federation have not been reviewed since 2004, yet the world has evolved significantly. ICT and socio-economic conditions have changed, making it necessary to revise and consolidate over 400 existing laws,” Fapohunda stated.
He acknowledged the enormity of the task but assured that the committee was committed to delivering a robust and updated legal framework.
