Human Rights Group Demands Justice for Alleged Organ Harvesting
The Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR), Akwa Ibom State branch, has called on the Inspector General of Police to investigate the mysterious death of Mr Gideon Anietie Emmanuel, a resident of Benin City, Edo State.
The organization alleges that Gideon, who died on September 12, 2024, was a victim of organ harvesting carried out by Dr Sunday Oladapo Elusoji of “Our Medical Clinic.” The CDHR claims that Gideon’s kidney and spleen were removed without consent following his admission to the clinic after an accident.
In a petition signed by Comrade Ndifreke Afangide, CDHR Chairman in Akwa Ibom State, the group detailed a series of troubling events leading to the young man’s demise. According to the petition, Gideon’s father was informed by his daughter on September 11 that Gideon had been involved in an accident.
The petition highlights conflicting accounts from a vigilante who reportedly transported Gideon to the clinic. Initially, the vigilante claimed to have personally taken him to the hospital, only to later assert that four individuals, including one wearing an army cap, were responsible.
Dr Elusoji is also accused of providing inconsistent explanations about Gideon’s condition and treatment. Initially, he claimed internal bleeding necessitated surgery, resulting in the removal of the kidney and spleen. However, he later stated that the kidney remained functional.
The CDHR alleges further negligence and corruption, accusing the Edo State Police Command of collecting N130,000 from Gideon’s family under the guise of facilitating arrests and investigations but failing to act decisively.
Comrade Afangide expressed outrage, stating, “We stand firm and resolute in our pursuit of truth and accountability. We demand immediate action from the authorities to ensure that justice is served.”
The CDHR is demanding the immediate prosecution of Dr Elusoji and those involved in transporting Gideon to the hospital, the closure of “Our Medical Clinic,” and an overhaul of the investigation into the case.
The incident has sparked widespread condemnation, with activists and the public questioning the integrity of the healthcare system and the police.
In a statement, the CDHR reiterated its commitment to the cause. “We will not rest until justice is served. We will continue to push for the truth to be revealed and for those responsible to be held accountable.”
As investigations unfold, the family of Gideon Anietie Emmanuel remains in mourning, clinging to the hope that justice will prevail. The CDHR has assured them of unwavering support in their quest for truth and accountability.
