EFCC Seizes Ex-Governor Okowa’s Passport Amid N1.3tn Probe

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has confiscated the passport of former Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa following his recent arrest over alleged misappropriation of N1.3 trillion in oil derivation funds. Okowa was taken into custody on November 4, 2024, as part of an investigation into the alleged diversion of funds allocated to Delta State between 2015 and 2023.

An anonymous EFCC source confirmed that Okowa, who was detained at the commission’s Port Harcourt office, was granted bail last Wednesday on the condition that he surrenders his travel documents. “The amount involved is too substantial to risk any complications,” the source explained, underscoring that the move was a measure to prevent potential flight.

Responding to the allegations for the first time, Okowa denounced the accusations as “laughable and totally false.” During a solidarity visit from the Urhobo Progress Union (UPU) at his residence in Asaba, Okowa argued that the accusations lacked merit, citing financial challenges Delta State faced during his tenure. “To divert N1.3 trillion would mean pocketing N16 to N20 billion monthly,” he said. “Even the President of this country would find it challenging, let alone a state governor.”

Okowa also pointed to Delta State’s high wage obligations, stating, “Delta State is the highest salary-paying state in this nation; salaries and pensions exceed N11 billion monthly.” He argued that he was committed to paying workers on time and funding essential projects, especially in riverine areas, despite limited resources.

Okowa acknowledged the EFCC’s role in investigating allegations but expressed confidence in a favourable outcome, dismissing the claims as politically motivated. He thanked the UPU for its unwavering support and affirmed his continued backing of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, stating, “By the special grace of God, we did what we ought to do, and I know Governor Oborevwori will deliver even more.”
