SPDC Urges FG to Tackle Oil Theft and Illegal Refining
The Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Ltd (SPDC) has called on the Federal Government to take urgent action against crude oil theft and illegal refining to safeguard Nigeria’s natural resources and protect the environment.
At the opening of the 42nd Annual International Conference and Exhibition of the Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorationists (NAPE) in Lagos, SPDC’s Country Chair and Managing Director, Osagie Okunbor, highlighted the importance of addressing these critical issues. Okunbor, represented by SPDC’s Exploration Manager, Gogo Eneyok, emphasized that the government must enhance the regulatory environment, particularly through ongoing improvements to the Petroleum Industry Act.
“The menace of crude theft and illegal refining must also be tackled to safeguard the nation’s resources and protect the environment,” Okunbor stated.
Okunbor also noted that SPDC will continue to drive energy security in Nigeria across the upstream, midstream, downstream, and renewable sectors, working with government and industry stakeholders. The 2024 NAPE conference, themed *”Resolving the Nigeria Energy Trilemma: Energy Security, Sustainable Growth & Affordability,”* provided a platform for addressing these pressing concerns.
“We are focused on generating maximum value and cash to power the country,” Okunbor said, underlining Shell’s commitment to both energy security and sustainable growth. He also highlighted Shell’s efforts in reducing emissions through advanced technologies, aiming to meet its Greenhouse Gas reduction targets. Additionally, SPDC is increasing its domestic gas delivery via a 150-kilometre distribution network and supporting clean, affordable energy access for communities through initiatives with Daystar and All On.
