DSS, Police Alerted to Halt Factional NANS Protest Plan
The Supreme Council of Federal Capital Territory Youths (FCT Youth Council) has issued a strong warning to Comrade Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, also known as Babtee, identified as a factional Senate President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), over his call for FCT youths to join a protest against a former top military official. The council has alerted the Department of State Services (DSS) and the police to prevent the protest, citing potential risks to public peace.
In a statement released during a press briefing in Garki, Abuja, Comrade Barnabas Yakubu, President of the FCT Youth Council, alleged that Babtee received $8,500 from an undisclosed senior government official to organise a protest aimed at smearing the reputation of a former Chief of Defence Intelligence.
“We will not participate in such an ungodly protest, nor will we allow it to hold in any part of the Federal Capital. Babtee, or whatever he is called, will have FCT Youths to contend with if he tries to assemble anybody for protest in Abuja,” Yakubu firmly stated.
The FCT Youth Council’s press release also expressed concerns about alleged financial incentives exchanged to mobilise youths for the protest, calling it an “abuse of the trust vested in the leadership of NANS.” The council stressed that it would not support any movement that could provoke violence or damage property, drawing parallels to the disruptions seen during the End SARS protests.
The statement read: “Our stance is clear: we will not support any movement that risks chaos and the destruction of property within our territory. We call on Babtee to return any funds received for this ill-advised scheme and to focus on addressing the pressing concerns facing the student body. There are numerous critical issues affecting students that demand attention and constructive action—not distractions like this baseless protest.”
Yakubu concluded by warning that any attempt to stage a protest in Abuja on this matter would be met with strong resistance from the FCT Youth Council. He urged the NANS leadership to prioritise the real needs of students over politically motivated schemes, reinforcing the council’s commitment to safeguarding peace and stability in the Federal Capital Territory.
