Olu of Warri Dissolves Itsekiri Youth Council’s Executive
In a bold move to reform youth leadership in his domain, the Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III, has dissolved the executive committee of the Itsekiri National Youths Council (INYC) due to its failure to adopt a new constitution.
The dissolution was announced during the Itsekiri Youths Assembly held in Warri, where palace sources revealed the monarch’s concerns about the youth council’s structure. “For about 30 years, executive positions in the INYC have been filled by individuals loyal to certain leaders,” noted palace insiders.
According to the announcement, the disbanding of the INYC’s executive was attributed to the council’s “failure to successfully adopt a new constitution and conduct elections at both National and chapter levels.” To address these gaps, the Olu appointed leaders from the National Association of Itsekiri Graduates and the National Association of Itsekiri Students (NAIS) to lead a constitution drafting committee. Esteemed Chiefs Omolubi Newuwumi and Wilson Olley will serve as advisers to the committee.
The Olu’s directive sets a January 2025 deadline for the completion of the new constitution, after which fresh elections will be held. In addition, he decreed that “nobody above age 40 should be operating as a youth in the Warri Kingdom,” reinforcing his vision for a revitalised and constitutionally governed youth council.
