Former World’s Heaviest Man, Khalid Bin Mohsen Shaari, Now Weighs 63kg After Losing 542kg

In a remarkable journey of transformation, Khalid Bin Mohsen Shaari, once the heaviest man in the world, now weighs a healthy 63 kilograms, a far cry from his previous weight of 610 kilograms (1,345 lbs). His story is not just one of weight loss, but of determination, medical intervention, and the life-changing impact of dedicated care.

Shaari, a Saudi Arabian, first captured global attention in August 2013 when he was declared the heaviest person alive. At just 29 years old, he was bedridden, unable to walk, and relied on a wheelchair for mobility. His extreme weight was more than a physical burden; it was a life-threatening condition that had confined him to his bed for three years.

His plight caught the attention of King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, then the King and Prime Minister of Saudi Arabia. Deeply moved by Shaari’s condition, the king intervened personally, organizing a team of 30 medical professionals to take charge of Shaari’s care. In a carefully orchestrated operation, Shaari was transported from his home to King Fahd Medical City using a forklift and a specially designed bed to accommodate his immense size.

The treatment plan developed for Shaari was both comprehensive and rigorous. It included a personalized diet plan, a structured exercise regimen, and ultimately, gastric bypass surgery. The initial phase of his treatment saw Shaari undergoing six months of intensive care and extensive physiotherapy, which helped him lose nearly half of his body weight.

By 2023, Shaari’s weight had dropped to an astonishing 63.5 kilograms. However, his journey didn’t end there. He underwent multiple surgeries to remove the excessive skin that resulted from his dramatic weight loss. This series of procedures was essential not only for his physical health but also for his overall well-being and self-esteem.

Today, Shaari no longer requires the assistance of friends and family for mobility. He has reclaimed his independence and is living a life that was once unimaginable for him. The medical staff who supported him through his journey affectionately refer to him as “the smiling man,” a nickname that reflects the positivity and resilience he displayed throughout his transformation.

Shaari’s story stands as a testament to the power of dedicated medical care and the incredible changes that can happen when proper intervention and support are provided. His journey from 610 kilograms to 63 kilograms is not just a weight loss story; it is a narrative of hope, perseverance, and the life-altering impact of compassionate care.
