Bread Seller Who Never Attended School Fraudulently Mobilized for NYSC
In a shocking revelation, Brigadier General Yushau Ahmed, the Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), disclosed that a bread seller who had never attended school was fraudulently mobilized for the NYSC scheme by the University of Calabar, Cross River State.
This startling development comes in the wake of the NYSC voiding 101 certificates, bringing the total number of invalidated certificates to 178 as part of a crackdown on unqualified individuals entering the program.
“The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar came here to report that she observed some names appeared on the institution’s list and they ought not to have been there,” Brigadier General Ahmed revealed. He praised the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Florence Obi, for her integrity and forthrightness in alerting the scheme to the mobilization of unqualified graduates from her institution.
Ahmed explained that the bread seller’s name had appeared on the graduation list provided by the University of Calabar, even though the individual had never attended the institution. “Previously, a bread seller was mobilized on the graduation list from the same institution. There are bad eggs in many places that generate matriculation numbers and courses for their candidates,” he stated.
This incident has sparked outrage and raised questions about the integrity of the processes used by some universities to mobilize graduates for the NYSC. The NYSC has vowed to leave no stone unturned in its efforts to sanitize its mobilization process and ensure that only qualified graduates are enlisted in the national service program.
The NYSC scheme, established in 1973, is a mandatory one-year program for graduates of Nigerian universities and polytechnics. It was designed to foster national unity and promote understanding among Nigeria’s diverse ethnic groups. However, incidents like this highlight the ongoing challenges in maintaining the integrity of the program.
