Tinubu Pledges Major Investment in DICON to Boost Defence Capabilities
President Bola Tinubu has committed to significant financial investments in the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) to enhance its capabilities and fulfill its mandates by 2030. Speaking at the 60th anniversary of DICON and the inaugural African Defence Industries Conference in Abuja, Tinubu, represented by Secretary to the Government of the Federation Sen. George Akume, emphasized the administration’s dedication to national security.
“The contemporary security challenges we face necessitate a Whole of Government and Society Approach,” Tinubu said. “The signing of the DICON Act 2023 marks a new era, positioning DICON as a central player in our Military Industrial Complex.”
Tinubu highlighted that the DICON Evolution Strategy and Road Map 2030 aims to close performance gaps and elevate DICON to a global standard. This strategy aligns with his administration’s “Renewed Hope Agenda,” focusing on national security and economic diversification through industrialization, digitization, and innovation.
“Industrialization and innovation are crucial but capital-intensive ventures,” Tinubu noted. “My administration will invest substantially in DICON to ensure it meets its 2030 goals efficiently.”
He praised the progress made towards establishing advanced production capabilities, including automated lines for uncrewed vehicles and the BAT A-1 Specialised Assault Rifle. These developments aim to bolster the armed forces’ effectiveness and address security challenges like terrorism and banditry.
Tinubu also highlighted plans for a micro motherboard processing facility, which will support robotics and artificial intelligence innovations. This facility, alongside a new tech hub and R&D lab in Abuja, will drive technological advancement and create jobs.
“The Maiden Africa Defence Industries Conference provides a platform for international collaboration,” he added. “We invite global partners to join us in enhancing our capabilities and promoting regional security.”
The President’s pledge reflects a strong commitment to modernizing Nigeria’s defence infrastructure and fostering regional stability through strategic partnerships and technological advancement.
