Sanwo-Olu Calls for Enhanced Data Protection Amid Digital Transformation
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has urged the implementation of stronger data protection measures as Nigeria continues to advance in digital transformation. This call was made during a courtesy visit by Dr. Vincent Olatunji, Chief Executive Officer of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), and his team in Ikeja on Wednesday.
Represented by his Deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized the critical need for safeguarding personal data in the digital age. “As the country continues to embrace digital transformation, the need for robust data protection measures becomes increasingly crucial,” he stated.
Sanwo-Olu highlighted the global issue of identity theft, noting its severe consequences, including loss of livelihoods and the complexities involved in reclaiming one’s identity, even in advanced nations. He stressed the importance of database protection, pointing out that identity theft is not just a personal concern but a significant threat to society.
The governor also expressed the Lagos State Government’s willingness to collaborate with the NDPC in training officers on data analysis and related areas, reaffirming the administration’s commitment to digitalization. “We are digitally minded in Lagos, and we believe that the only way we can replicate things without trouble and with speed is through digitalisation,” Sanwo-Olu said, adding that this focus has helped increase the state’s Internally Generated Revenue by reducing loopholes.
Dr. Vincent Olatunji, during the visit, underscored the NDPC’s dedication to data protection, stating that identity theft is a serious global issue. “As a commission, we will continue to ensure that citizens’ personal data are protected, both locally and globally,” Olatunji said.
He also announced plans for an upcoming conference organized by the NDPC, which will bring together technology experts from around the world. The commission seeks to partner with the Lagos State Government for this event and pledged to train state officials on data protection.
Olatunji commended Lagos for its leadership in embracing and implementing laudable projects in Nigeria, signaling a strong foundation for ongoing collaboration between the state and the commission.
