OPay Customers Rampage at Office Over Alleged Stolen Funds and Unresolved Disputes
A frenzy erupted at OPay’s microfinance bank office as furious customers, led by Okunola Akinropo, vented their anger over alleged stolen funds and unresolved transaction disputes, resulting in chaos and destruction.
Akinropo, a disgruntled bricklayer, spearheaded the protest after his attempts to resolve a disputed transaction, where he was debited N190,000 during a failed ATM withdrawal, went unanswered for weeks. His visit quickly escalated into a scene of chaos as other aggrieved customers joined in, echoing similar complaints of neglect and financial losses.
The situation worsened when Akinropo’s grievances gained traction on social media, particularly on TikTok, where OPay was accused of engaging in fraudulent activities.
Despite OPay management acknowledging delays in resolving issues and promising to address all outstanding matters, the enraged customers demanded immediate action and restitution for their losses.
A representative of the bank, speaking on condition of anonymity, acknowledged the challenges faced by customers but criticized some for unnecessarily escalating their complaints.
In response, OPay released an official statement attributing the delays in resolving card disputes to industry-wide challenges. The statement expressed the company’s commitment to collaborating with stakeholders to expedite resolutions and apologized for any inconvenience caused.
As tensions continue to rise, the incident underscores the growing frustration among customers over perceived negligence and lack of accountability in the financial sector.
