Archbishop, Most Rev. Dr. Alfred Adewale Martins Urges Nigerian Leaders to Sacrifice for Unity and Progress at Chrism Mass
The Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos recently hosted its 2024 Chrism Mass at the Holy Cross Cathedral on March 28th, 2024. Led by the Most Rev. Dr. Alfred Adewale Martins, the Archbishop of Lagos, the mass was a significant event celebrating the priesthood and renewing vows of priests across the Archdiocese.
During his address, Archbishop Martins emphasized the importance of unity and sacrifice for the progress of Nigeria. He called on leaders and the government to make sacrifices, highlighting that these sacrifices should not be one-sided but should involve both leaders and the governed.
“The prophet Amos challenges us as he asks a fundamental question: ‘Can two walk together unless they have agreed?’ Our unity has its ultimate root in the unity of the Trinity and in the bond of love that leads to working and walking together united in heart and mind,” Archbishop Martins stated.
He urged priests to embody Christ’s love, compassion, and unity in their interactions, serving as examples of hope and reconciliation in a world marked by division. He also commended the priests for their dedication and reminded them of the need to continue their work with renewed vigor.
Regarding the state of the nation, Archbishop Martins acknowledged the challenges faced by Nigerians, including insecurity, hunger, and kidnapping. He called for patience and collective sacrifice from all citizens, emphasizing the need for leaders to lead by example.
“We live in tough times with security challenges, hunger, and kidnapping. The government is trying its best, but every Nigerian must be patient and contribute to a better Nigeria,” remarked Archbishop Martins.
He concluded by urging Christians to be their brothers’ keepers, especially during these challenging times. “Just look around, there must be somebody who is hungry, somebody who is thirsty, somebody who is naked, somebody who is in dire pains. Do the little you can to alleviate the sufferings of your brothers and sisters,” he said.
The Chrism Mass provided a platform for Archbishop Martins to deliver a powerful message of unity, sacrifice, and hope, calling on leaders and citizens alike to work together for a brighter future for Nigeria.
