FCCPC Supports NERC’s Actions Against DisCos Over Arbitrary Electricity Billing
The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has thrown its weight behind the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) in its recent actions against 11 Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) for arbitrary billing practices and non-compliance with billing regulations.
In a statement issued by Dr. Adamu Abdullahi, the Acting Executive Vice Chairman of FCCPC, the commission expressed solidarity with NERC’s efforts to protect unmetered customers from unfair billing practices by DisCos. Dr. Abdullahi emphasized the importance of enforcing regulations aimed at ensuring fair treatment for consumers without meters.
“The capping regulation was a significant step towards ensuring fairer treatment for those without meters, and the FCCPC fully supports its enforcement,” stated Dr. Abdullahi. He highlighted the FCCPC’s mandate to protect consumers from exploitative practices and demand redress for any violations.
Dr. Abdullahi urged NERC to consider implementing stronger measures to deter future violations, including increased financial penalties, stricter enforcement mechanisms, and even the revocation of operating licenses for persistent offenders. These measures, he emphasized, align with the FCCPC’s commitment to ensuring consumer rights and promoting fair competition in the electricity sector.
Acknowledging the systemic challenges facing the electricity sector, including metering gaps, billing malpractices, and inadequate customer service, Dr. Abdullahi underscored the need for fundamental reforms to address these issues effectively. He encouraged consumers who have been affected by arbitrary billing to lodge complaints with their respective DisCos and escalate unresolved issues to NERC or the FCCPC for further action.
“We are committed to investigating all legitimate complaints and securing redress for consumers,” affirmed Dr. Abdullahi. He also highlighted the FCCPC’s ongoing efforts to organize electricity consumer platforms nationwide, providing consumers with opportunities to voice their concerns and receive prompt responses and resolutions from DisCos and regulators.
As NERC continues to enforce regulations aimed at improving transparency and accountability in the electricity sector, the FCCPC reaffirms its commitment to championing consumer rights and fostering a more equitable environment for electricity consumers across Nigeria.
