Tinubu Dissolves Boards of Parastatals, Agencies, and Institutions
In a significant move, President Bola Tinubu has given his approval for the dissolution of the governing boards of various federal government parastatals, agencies, institutions, and government-owned companies. This decision, aimed at exercising constitutional powers and serving the public interest, was announced by Willie Bassey, the Director of Information in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.
According to the statement released on Monday, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, has taken immediate action to dissolve the governing boards. It is important to note that the dissolution does not affect the boards, commissions, and councils listed in the Third Schedule, Part 1, Section 153 (i) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended.
In light of this development, until new boards are constituted, the Chief Executive Officers of the parastatals, agencies, institutions, and government-owned companies are instructed to refer any matters requiring board attention to the President. They are to do so through the Permanent Secretaries of their respective supervisory ministries and offices. The Permanent Secretaries, in turn, are directed to route such correspondences through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, ensuring compliance with this directive.
The directive, which came into effect on Friday, June 16, 2023, applies to all ministries, departments, and agencies. It is essential for them to adhere to the provisions of this directive. Moreover, Permanent Secretaries have been specifically instructed to inform the Chief Executive Officers of the affected agencies under the supervision of their respective ministries/offices, urging immediate compliance.
With the dissolution of these boards, President Tinubu aims to bring about a fresh start and potentially implement new strategies and visions for the various parastatals, agencies, institutions, and government-owned companies. This decision highlights the commitment of the government to ensuring effective governance and public service delivery, further enhancing accountability and transparency in the country’s administration.
