In a statement released on Tuesday, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) announced that it no longer expects the United Kingdom to experience a recession in 2023. The improved outlook is attributed to the country’s resilient demand and supply, although concerns persist due to high inflation and subsequent monetary tightening.

The IMF has revised its projection for the UK’s economic growth in 2023 to 0.4%, an upgrade from its previous estimate of a 0.3% contraction. This adjustment reflects several positive factors, including faster wage growth outpacing inflation, increased government spending, and a boost in confidence following Brexit. Additionally, lower energy prices and stabilization in global supply chains have contributed to the positive economic outlook.

Looking ahead, the IMF predicts that the British economy will expand by 1% in 2024, supported by disinflation that will enhance real incomes. Furthermore, the UK is expected to achieve an average growth rate of 2% by 2025 and 2026, as monetary and financial conditions ease.

However, the IMF warns that inflation in the UK will take longer to reach the targeted 2% rate, now projected to occur only by mid-2025, delaying previous estimates by six months. Consequently, the agency cautions that interest rates may remain higher for an extended period to effectively manage inflationary pressures.
