NCC’s Commitment to Broadband Expansion Empowers Nigeria’s Underserved Communities
In a transformative move, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) pledges to bridge the digital divide and extend the benefits of broadband connectivity to grassroots communities and underserved populations across the country. At a recent session in Lagos, Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta, the Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, reassured the nation that the implementation of the national broadband plan would prioritize inclusivity.
Addressing the critical issue of financial inclusion, which relies heavily on a robust broadband infrastructure, the NCC emphasized its dedication to driving Nigeria’s digital economy at the grassroots level. Freda Bruce-Bennet, representing the Digital Economy Department, emphasized that the Commission is mindful of the existing infrastructure gaps and remains committed to ensuring universal access to telecom services for all Nigerians, regardless of their circumstances or location.
Bruce-Bennet highlighted the NCC’s focus on supporting financial inclusion through the provision of robust broadband infrastructure. She pointed out that the Commission has been at the forefront of leveraging technology platforms to enhance access to financial services for all citizens. One such initiative is the deployment of broadband infrastructure through an open access model (Infraco licensing) in the six geopolitical zones, as well as Lagos, which enjoys a special status within the telecom ecosystem. These strategic infrastructure deployments will pave the way for numerous platforms that can accelerate financial inclusion.
To further promote digital financial services and inclusion in Nigeria, the NCC has facilitated key partnerships with institutions such as the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the Fintech Association of Nigeria (FintechNGR), the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), and the Rockefeller Partnership Agreement (RPA). These collaborations aim to drive the adoption of digital financial services and foster a thriving digital economy in the country.
Additionally, the NCC’s Digital Economy Department is actively involved in the development of an information and digital training portal for the Association of Skilled Vocational Artisans of Nigeria (ASVAN). This initiative will provide valuable resources and training opportunities to empower artisans with digital skills and knowledge.
The Commission’s efforts to create an enabling environment for digitized financial inclusion have received acclaim from industry experts. Dr. Uju Ogubunka, Chairman of the Bank Customers Association of Nigeria, commended the NCC’s regulatory efforts and encouraged participants and other government agencies to utilize the Commission’s information portal for essential insights. The development of a robust digital economy is expected to enhance the standard of living for those willing to embrace its benefits.
The NCC’s commitment to extending broadband access to underserved communities is a game-changer for Nigeria. By prioritizing inclusivity and partnering with key stakeholders, the Commission is paving the way for digital transformation, economic growth, and improved livelihoods across the nation. As broadband connectivity reaches every corner of Nigeria, the potential for innovation, education, and economic empowerment becomes limitless, ensuring a brighter future for all.
