Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad and his wife Asma have tested positive for Coronavirus, the president’s office said in a statement on Monday.

A post on the President’s official Facebook page said that the Assads underwent rapid COVID-19 tests “after feeling mild symptoms” similar to the symptoms of infection with Coronavirus.

While they both tested positive, they are in “good health and a stable condition” and would self-isolate for “up to two or three weeks” from home. Al-Assad and his wife also called on all Syrians to continue following restrictions and prevention measures “as possible”.

To date, Syria has officially recorded 16,042 Coronavirus cases and 1,068 deaths, although the actual figure is estimated to be much higher.
