Kazakh peacekeepers prepare to be sent to an African country
NUR-SULTAN, Kazakhstan – Kazakhstan has sent peacekeepers performing missions in various countries of the world, Defence Minister Nurlan Ermekbayev said during an online briefing on December 23.
“Since 2007, our peacekeepers have been sent to various missions as observers. They were in the Sahara, Nepal, Lebanon. In addition, our special unit was carrying out a mission in Iraq. Now the fourth company is in Lebanon. Four more of our peacekeepers are in Western Sahara,” the minister said.
According to him, Kazakhstan is currently training special units, which the United Nations has called in demand. These are engineer-sapper, reconnaissance, military-medical units, and military police.
“Now a field hospital is being deployed for preparation. The UN is an example of a decision where to send a military medical unit later. Most likely, to an African country,” Yrmekbayev said.
The minister explained that the budget of Kazakhstan does not provide for the costs of peacekeeping operations. The UN is funding this.
