Moldova’s prime minister Ion Chicu has been diagnosed with COVID-19, his communications adviser said late Tuesday.

Boris Harea, Chicu’s communications adviser, said that the prime minister tested positive after experiencing some symptoms of the virus. “The Prime Minister will run the government remotely”, Harea said, without disclosing other details about Chicu’s condition.

According to local media, on Monday Chicu participated in a working meeting with outgoing president Igor Dodon and parliament speaker Zinaida Greceanii. Earllier, the prime minister told the media that many of his cabinet members got infected with the virus.

Moldova re-entered a state of emergency on November 30 in an effort to tackle an increasing number of COVID-19 patients. Public events are prohibited in the country, and the government has also expanded mandatory mask-wearing to all public places.

Moldova on Tuesday recorded 1,709 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of infections to 119,204. It has also recorded 22 more deaths, bringing the total to 2,460, according to data released by the health ministry.
