Tokayev: Kazakhstan determined to hold transparent and fair parliamentary elections
NUR-SULTAN, Kazakhstan – Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, speaking on December 2 at a videoconference session of the Collective Security Council of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), said that he was counting on the support of the organisation’s partners.
“”We are determined to hold transparent and fair elections. We hope for the support of our partners. We expect observers from your states, as well as through the parliamentary assemblies of the CIS and, of course, the CSTO,” Tokayev said.
He recalled that this year Kazakhstan has implemented a package of democratic reforms aimed at developing a multi-party system and political competition.
Thus, at the legislative level, the institution of parliamentary opposition has been fixed and a 30% quota has been introduced in party lists for women and youth.
Parliamentary elections in Kazakhstan will be held on January 10, 2021. They will be attended by candidates from five parties – Nur Otan, Ak Zhol, Auyl, Adal and People’s Party of Kazakhstan.
Under the chairmanship of Vladimir Putin on December 2, a session of the Collective Security Council of the Collective Security Treaty Organization was held via videoconference. The CSTO includes Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia and Tajikistan.
